Diffusers for wellbeing

It is that time of year when we transition between the warmth of summer into the cooler damp days of Autumn proceeding on into the cold biting days of Winter. Air conditioning ceases and heating increases!

The children are back at school and we all know the recipe for being amongst germs are high here as they mingle with each other.

I have long been a user of burning essential oils, cleansing energy through incense and smudging with my White Sage bundle. Over the years i have seen these ways adapt and become more efficient and if I am honest ranging in price from very affordable to really expensive.

I confess I used to use the ceramic burner and my mum still uses hers. These are very affordable and come in a variety of pretty designs and colours. You usually place a tea light holder underneath with a few drops of your favourite oil in the little dish above, sometimes you can add water if wanted.

Whilst I love these, you need to bear in mind that you have a live flame burning and the oils can evaporate quite quickly in the dish if left unattended or not refilled.

You can also add a few drops to cotton wool balls and leave in a dish. Make sure it is in a dish that you don’t use for food, as essential oils are strong and will taint the surface so be careful what you use as they can erode certain finishes!

We switched to a Bamboo steam diffuser. The main pull for me investing in one of these is two fold. It is safe to use and has varying outputs either a slower diffuse or a more rapid output. Equally it has a safety cut off, so once the chamber evaporates and has no water the diffuser switches itself off. I think mine will run to empty in approx 4 hours.

Equally it produces a steady stream of steam, ideal for adding some moisture to dry environments particularly if you have the heating on.

We use this quite a lot in my daughter’s bedroom when she is full of cold and coughs. It has a soft night light setting that can be dimmed or brighter. The steam helps her breathe more easily and the oils help cleanse the air of germs. The moisture doesn’t swamp her room like a previous larger steam kit I bought did! Plus I am safe in the knowledge that the diffuser switches itself off.

Blends

There are a variety of blends out there to create. Or if you prefer some offer them pre-blended.

A favourite that runs continuously in our household is a simple combination of Eucalyptus and Tea Tree Oil. Known for their anti-microbial properties, soothing scent and perfect for clearing sinuses.

Peppermint and Lavender can be a stimulating blend that smells pleasant too and great for headaches!

Some lovely Pre-blends from Neals Yard Remedies are

Defence

Calming

Night time

Women’s Balance Blend

I’d love to know what your favourite blends are.
